KINEI NAKASONE

Teacher Kinei Nakasone died the day 21 of December from 2002 to the 66 year-old age. Our but I am honest condolence

KINEI NAKASONE

He was born in Goya, Okinawa city, the 1st of December of 1936. He began the practice of Karate in August 1956 at the age of 20, having Master Seikichi Toguchi as his first teacher. His training partners at that time were: - Masanobu Shdo - Katsuyoshi Kanei - Zenshu Toyama- Hiroshi Kuniyoshi- Shintoku Gushiken - Kiyosuke Maejo

In 1962, he opened his first Shoreikan Dojo in Kin Cho (KIN town) and in 1980 he moved to Okinawa city (Koza), but on this occasion to the Shobukan Association, headed by his partner Master Masanabu Shinjo. In 1996, the Okinawa Karate-Do Goju Ryu SEIBUKAI, was established. He was then named president, obtaining at the same time the degree of Hanshi 10 dan. Master Shintoku Gushiken was named vice-president and Master Kiyosuke Maejo, general manager. It is easy to see, that with the exception of Master Toyama, of all the pupils formed during the first courses of Master Seikichi Toguchi, most of them have formed part of this organization, except for

Masters Shinjo and Kanei who died in 1993, at an early age. The reason for establishing this association was precisely the death of Master Masnobu Shinjo - founder of the Shobukan Association. This caused the desintegration of the school, after a period of coexistence that lasted a few years, headed by Master Kinei Nakasone. Afterwards and due to some differences among some of its members, as time went by, they were obliged to leave the previous organization and establish the present Seibukai.

The Foundation of a style

The school's policy is based on three strong points:

1. The basic training: Sanchin, Tensho and the technical trainings: Kigu, Makiwara, kami, sashi, etc. All of them based on philosophical fundamentals.

2. The practice of Katas (BujutsuTeki = samurai Kata, physical Kataand Kata training based on the Okinawan dance and classical music).

3. Training in couples (Kumite attacks and defenses and defense based on grabs, throws, locks and strangleholds, following the kata's conduct).

The kata practiced in the system are:

a) Basic Kata: Sancchin, Tensho

b) Fukyo Kata: Gekisai 1-2, Gekiha 1-2 and Kakuha

c) Kaishu Kata: Saifa, Seiinchin, Sanserryu, Seisan, Shishoshin,

Seipai, Kururunfa, Suparinpe.

Now we will make a brief summary of the most elemental ones.

Sanchin Kata

It is the most convenient one to develop the muscles, as it improves the breathing, due to the pupil's persistent repetition. Taking into account that it is a difficult Kata, we could say that it is the hardest Kata of the Goju ryu karate. he essential elements of this Kata are he following: It is said that whoever practices it acquires a body that can take any strike. By practicing the Sanchin Unsoku Hou Kata (way of moving the legs), all the muscles of the body are contracted, centering the balance under the waist, in the Seika tanden point. With the Sanchin Dachi posture, it is possible to be attacked anywhere along the body, without suffering too much pain. For this, an important consideration is the proper breathing technique for each Kata movement; one of them is known by he name of Jyu Soku:

a) Inhale slowly and exhale rapidly

b) Inhale rapidly and exhale slowly

c) Inhale and exhale slowly

d) Inhale and exhale rapidly.

Another technique is known as Tai Soku:

a) Inhale and stop

b) Exhale and stop.

In any case, the most important thing is to inhale through the nose and exhale through the mouth. To all this we should add that, the body is developed when trainwith determination and persistence.

Tensho Kata

The founder of the Goju Ryu, Chojun Miyagi Sensei developed the Juu-no Kata Ten-Sho) and the San-Chin Kata (Go no kata) based on Ichi-Gi-Hou (Tai-Ki-shu) from Chinese Kenpo. Most part of the kata is performed with the hands open.

This Kata has technique designed to act with the highest energy, changing and avoiding the adversary's attack freely with the hands open, either attacking or defending. Juu-no Kata, Tensho with free and flexible movements, is considered as the most practical Kata against the strongest attacks.

FUKYO KATA.- GEKISAI 1-2, GEKIHA 1-2, -KAKU-HA

Geki-Sai Kata

It is believed that this Kata was developed by the Goju Ryu founder,Chojun Miyagi, to improve the physical fitness of young people and the health of the adults. It consists of Jo-Dan, Chudan and Ge-Dan techniques: defense, attack and also, continuous kicking technique, hiji-ate, ura-uchi. It was also created with the intention of showing the directions of forward and backward, right and left. This group of two katas GekiSai-Tchi, Geki-Sai-Ni and its Bunkai Kumite are considered as easy-learning katas.

Geki-Ha Kata

It is supposed to have been created by Seikichi Toguchi Shihan to teach Churyu (Intermediate) to intermediate level pupils. Its technical characteristics of attack and defense are developed to go from closed hand to open hand techniques. It consists in sou-Uke, Kou-Uke, in NenmiDachi and constant pushes, Soku-TouGeri, Ura-Uke, Morote-Tsuki. They are created as diffusion katas.

Kaku-Ha Kata

Like the previous ones, it was also created by Seikichi Toguchi Shihan for more advanced level students- Jokyu - when the student shows he is qualified and has a higher knowledge of the KoRyu-Kata.

The most frequently used are: Ko-Ryu (traditional) Kata son Shi-Sou-Chin, Sei-San,, Sei-Pai and Sei-ln-Chin. It is therefore very suitable to know this Kata, for a better understanding of the traditional katas mentioned above.

Jaishukata.-SaIfa ,Sei-ln-chin ,San-Sei-ryu ,Sei-San ,Shi-Sou-Chin ,SeiPai, Ku-Lun-Fa, Su-Pa-Rin-Pe.

The keys to the warrior attitude

For a complete karate development, two essential parts must be joined in the human being: the physical, mentioned previously, and the mental-spiritual. However, we can say that when the body and the brain become one, thanks to the breathing, the spirit emerges.

To obtain the correct mental and spiritual state according to Master Kinei Nakasone - it is necessary to abide to a series of rules:

€ Respect courtesy: Courtesy is one of the most important and necessary things, for the member of any society, being essential in all who practice karate.

€ Train the mental cooperation: Peace and love cannot be reached without cooperation. Mental cooperation is respect to the seniors and love to all the colleagues and juniors. To be proud of oneself for pleasure: it not only draws the attention of other people, but also, sows the bone of contention.

€ Learn to exercise patience. One must learn to achieve physical patience while training. Without cultivating the physical and mental patience, the spirit does not flow, it does not emerge and without it, it is not possible to evolve in Karate.

  INTERVIEW KINEI NAKASONE 2000

B.l: When did you begin practicing karate?

Kinei Nakasone: I began to practice when I was in secondary school at the age of 15 years.

B.l.: Have you only practiced Goju style since you were 15?

K.N.: At that time there were not yet any centers in which to practice the Goju style. There were no training centers like the ones we know today as Dojo (karate practice centers). My beginnings were with an 85 years old man, who taught me karate for a period of three months in the yard of his house, but with the Shorin style.

B.l.: When did you first encounter the Goju style?

K.N.: When I was 20 years old. Since teacher Toji taught it closely, I was his pupil.

B.l.: Could you name some of your sempais (colleagues)?

K.N.: At that time Eichi Miyazato, Seko Higa, Meitoru Yagui were there. All of them were pupil-brothers. In those days the dan system did not yet exist and was simply an association. Eichi Miyazato was the person who introduced the dan system for the first time.

B.l.:. Have you ever studied with Seko Higa?

K.N.: No, I was only able to see Keichi Miyake when he taught, I did not see the other teachers.

B.l.: What could you tell us about professor Toguchi

K.N.: Professor Toguchi was not big in stature but was very intelligent and especially, very much respected. Not in vain did he create many techniques, the basic practice and many diverse tactics.

B.l.: With whom did you practice in professor Tobuchi's dojo?

K.N.: With Masanobu Shinjo, Chojun Kyuna, and the people here present ... indicating the masters present during the interview, Hiroshi Kuniyoshi, Maekawa, etc. We can say that professor foguchi's pupils, were the ones who spread the Goju style the most.

B.l.: Where was professor Toguchi's dojo?

K.N.: In the city of Okinawa, in Nakanomachi.

B.l.: Did you only practice in the dojo or in other places?

K.N.: At the beginning professor foguchi taught in Yomitan, later in Nakano and later in Japan's main island. But usually he taught in Nakanomachi. I oracticed for 5 years and later in the town of Kin I opened the first dojo as ocal headquarters.

B.l.: Have all of professor Toguchi's pupils continued or have they changed to other styles?

K.N.: Most of them continued and did 10t change styles.

B.l.: Could you make some comments about the katas with music?

K.N.: I do not think it is such a bad thing for karate, since music gives life some rhythm and therefore this work with music has its own value.

B.l.: Which is your favourite Kata?

K.N.: The Seinchin. I like this kata so much that it forms part of me and my environment.

B.l.: Could you tell us what is the difference between contemporary karate and traditional karate?

K.N.: I believe that the earlier katas should not be changed, and that it is necessary to practise them as before. The old ways also have their good things, so we must keep up and not change the traditional Okinawa karate. When one is working 10, 20 or more years, is when you begin to understand the message - that in a subtle way - comes out from the bones and is felt in the heart.

B.l.: And one last question, What do you think about the Seibu Association?

K.N.: The Seibu Association has not been founded for long, but we are making a big effort to make it a group that will extend worldwide.

STORY OF AN ESTRANGEMENT

The Okinawa Karate-Do Gojuryu Seibukai, being recently developed, does not have many associates and is not connected to any other organization in existence, although it has received some offers from Okiku-Ren and Goju-Kai. The reply to these offers has been strict. "Until the organization is more consolidated, this alliance will not be among its objectives. "

I met Master Kinei Nakasone during the 30th anniversary of the Shoukan school, founded by Master Masanobu Shinp. I was sitting down, resting from my training session in the shobukan dojo, while Master Kinei was explaining some techniques to a few pupils from the United States, who were in Okinawa to participate in the anniversary. I was not introduced to the Master on that occasion, nor was I during the following years, affer the death of Master Shinp. As usual I went - in the morning - to Master Shinp's Dop to train. Master Kinei was sitting by the door. It was the first time I had been to Master Shinp's Dop to work, after his death. I greeted the people who were there and told them who I was, but Master Kinei did not believe me and called Master Shinjo's daughter- who was there since the house and the gym were on the same floor, with the prescribed separations. She said she did not know me, which gave place to the logical inconveniences since nobody there knew me at that moment The girl's reply surprised me, since I had for many years gone there in the summer mornings to train, when she was on holidays, also my face and beard were not usual in Japan, and so I decided not to give it much importance and left.

Two years went by before we met and in an accidental way. Behind the hotel where I stayed, there was a karate gym recent/y opened. When I looked into one of the classes one afternoon, I discovered Master Kuniyoshi, with whom I had worked some mornings in the past. I went in to say hello, I explained my situation and he gave me an explanation of the organization's separation, and gave me Master Kinei's address, which was about 500 meters from where we were, explaining that at present, the Kancho of the new organization was Kinei Nakasone Sensei. Master Kuniyoshi said he would call Master Kinei to ten him about my intention of training with that system and belonging to the new organization. The first day I went to the dojo, where they all knew of my presence. The Master was not there, but this time there were colleagues with whom I had practiced before. After that, I started seeing the master and training under his supervision, with all this means.
